One person in five is still waiting for the Bible in their own language. The vision of Wycliffe Bible Translators, in partnership with its supporters, is that everyone will have access to God’s word in the language that speaks to them best. There are currently more than 2,000 languages, spoken by over 170 million people, which need translation work to begin. Wycliffe is working to change that: along with partner organisations they are working in more than 120 countries on translation projects covering almost 2000 languages.
Martin and Hilary are both members of Wycliffe UK, working from their Hurdsfield home. Like most Wycliffe members they are not paid a salary but are funded through the support of individuals and churches such as HTH. Martin directs a 16-strong Writing Systems Technology Team which provides technical support to enable different languages and scripts to be used on computers. His team is spread across 11 locations from California to Thailand. Hilary works in an HR role for Wycliffe UK’s People Team, where she manages a programme enabling people to do short-term work overseas. She also provides career guidance for Wycliffe members wishing to reassess their skills, abilities and values, with a view to figuring out what they need to thrive in a work situation. |
